2007 Sag Harbor Charity Cup Challenge

What it is

The Sag Harbor Charity Cup Challenge is a charity event involving twelve teams competing aboard six beautiful and historic 12 meter America's Cup sailing yachts. The teams will vie to bring home a substantial contribution for the charity of their choice, as well as the perpetual Sag Harbor Charity Cup.

It provides a wonderful opportunity for local charities and sponsors to come together to raise needed funds and enjoy a fun and exciting weekend racing on the water.

When it is

The Challenge will take place over the weekend of September 15 & 16, 2007, coincidental to Sag Harbor's HarborFest, an annual festival that celebrates the village's maritime heritage. This will be our third season - continuing the tradition of The Challenge as it continues to grow and becomes a premier event in the Hamptons social and sailing season.

The Format

Twelve teams will compete for the grand prize.

Each of the twelve racing teams will consist of 12 sailors; but they need not be experienced. Each of the six America's Cup yachts come with a captain and crew, and local sailors can participate to the degree they feel comfortable: hauling lines, cranking winches, and working to help their team win.

Each team will compete in a minimum of two races of about two hours in duration. Six teams compete on Saturday and six on Sunday. The best teams of each day will race on Sunday afternoon to determine the winner of the Cup and receive the cash purse to donate to their favorite charity.

Fundraising

Team sponsorships are $9,500 each. The winning team's charity will receive a minimum of $7,500 and each sponsored charity will receive a minimum of $1,000. There are other fundraising opportunities - occurring both prior to race weekend and over the course of the weekend - that will increase the total purse considerably. Included will be the chance to race or cruise on the boats to or from Newport; fundraising parties; seats and refreshments on the official committee boat; auctioning of spots aboard one of the America's Cup boats; and additional private and corporate sponsorships.
